Inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Exhibition on how a fictional fighter became one of the city’s most enduring cultural symbols
July 7, 2026
At the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, where the “Rocky” pose has become part of the city’s global identity, the museum is now inviting visitors to look deeper at the story behind the image. Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments explores how a fictional boxer became a real-world symbol of perseverance, and why that symbol continues to matter nearly fifty years after the original film.
The exhibition does not treat Rocky Balboa simply as a movie character or a pop culture reference. Instead, it positions him inside a much larger conversation about monuments, memory, and meaning.
At the center of that conversation is the Rocky statue, long stationed outside the museum steps and recognized around the world. For many, it is a photo stop. For others, it represents something more layered: ambition, resilience, and the idea of the underdog pushing forward no matter the odds. Inside the exhibition, the statue is reframed as a cultural artifact that reflects how public meaning is created over time.
The exhibition expands beyond film into art history and sports history, placing boxing imagery from different eras alongside contemporary interpretations. Ancient and modern works show how fighters have long been depicted as symbols of struggle and strength, connecting Rocky’s fictional journey to real traditions of storytelling through athletic figures.
Philadelphia’s own boxing history also plays a key role. The exhibition acknowledges real champions like Joe Frazier and the city’s deep connection to the sport, grounding Rocky’s story in a real urban landscape shaped by competition, resilience, and working-class identity.
As the exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of Rocky, Rising Up captures something very Philly: the belief in the underdog, the tension between myth and reality, and the power of a story that keeps moving forward.
